The following testimony of healing was submitted by E. J. W., North Yakima, Wash.. It is presented here as an example of the countless cases of healing that resulted exclusively from individuals working with the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy.
was selected at random from 170 pages of similar testimonies of
healing that resulted primarily from individual's efforts in resorting
to the Christian Science textbook for the healing of their ills. These
reports are found appended to both the textbook (Chapter - Fruitage
100 pages) and to Mary Baker Eddy's book Miscellaneous Writings (
Chapter - Testimonials
The question arises here: How is it possible for an individual without any personal contact with either Mary Baker Eddy, a teacher, or some taught in Christian Science to merely down in his living room and receive a healing of the quality that is reminiscent of Christ Jesus' healing work, by merely reading a book?
The obvious answer is that the healing was derived at as a matter of principle, or divine Principle, to be correct. The book presented a new way of thinking that illustrated the principles that Christ Jesus had talked about and demonstrated in his own work of healing the sick. Also, he was quite emphatic that his work was not really his own work, but was the Father's work (the work of divine Principle) which he merely carried out. That Principle never ceased to operate. It is as effective today as it had been in Christ Jesus' time, and will always remain the same. The person's reading of Mary Baker Eddy's textbook with an open mind, merely focused that person's thought onto the functioning of the ever operating divine Principle. Nothing more had been involved in the above case, and nothing more was required. Indeed, no other basis really exists on which the healing could have been achieved, as his experience bears out in which all other approaches to healing have failed.
Mary Baker Eddy herself experienced this contrast. Prior to her discovering Christian Science she had been in exceedingly poor health and had resorted to virtually every process of healing that had been offered at the time, but without avail. After discovering Christian Science, quite literally, a new life began. During the forty-four years that followed she carried out one of most demanding undertaking imaginable, both in the physical sense in terms of long hours of work, and in terms of potentially stressful situations, and suffered no ill effects. In fact, at the age of 87, she engaged herself in starting a newspaper, from square one, in a large metropolis. Health was clearly recognized by her as a matter of Principle, rather than as a matter of biological or material conditions.
One can recognize from her experience that if Christian Science healing is pursued as a matter of expecting biological change or a material regression of a disease, nothing will be accomplished. In contrast to that, when Christian Science healing is pursued as a matter of divine Principle, it is not only possible to achieve the healing, but it is also possible to traverse the entire process of healing in the space of a single moment, which is often the case.
Some years ago I wrote a novel on the subject of traversing great distances instantly, on the basis of a recognized higher principle. It has the title, Flight Without Limits. In the novel, the process of traversing vast distances in an instant, takes place physically. This stands in metaphor for what is already possible in the process of Christian Science healing, which society often denies and wants to have nothing to do with. Nevertheless, our ability to move as a matter of Principle, of divine Principle, opens up freedoms never before experienced, and possibly not yet even fully imagined.
In the previous article (God is Soul), I stated that a long road lies before us to traverse the vast distance for sense to Soul, - from a limited sense of love to universal love, reflecting divine Love. According to all evidence the distance is huge, and the challenges to overcome great. However, I did not say in that article that this long distance cannot be traversed in an instant. By its very nature, as a matter of divine Principle, Christian Science healing unfolds instantaneously when it happens. It may at times be preceded by a long period of moral, spiritual, and scientific development in consciousness, before the healing even begins. But when the threshold to health, and love, and freedom is crossed on the basis of divine Principle, the 'space' in between, no matter how vast it may appear, is usually crossed quickly. Nearly every healing in the 170 pages of testimonies mentioned earlier, attest to this fact.
At this point I need to consider which of the four columns of the foursquare matrix, that Mary Baker Eddy has placed all of her works on*1, represents the flow of divine Principle. I recognize that the fourth column, labeled, "divine Science," represents the movements of divine Principle in all the essential aspects that I recognize to exist, and have come to value. After all, science is an essential platform for the discovery, understanding, and application of universal principles. Divine Principle, which is reflected in countless forms, is no exception. It can be discovered in science, be understood, and then be applied.
The river that is associated with the fourth column is Euphrates.
The definition for the river is a complex one. It is made up of two parts which both pertain to operating humanly on the platform of divine Principle. The first part sets up the result that we attain by responding to divine Principle. The second part defines the atmosphere in which we can achieve that. The two parts really are one. I see Mary Baker Eddy telling us that we don't have to wait until we have shed the last vestiges of 'earth' to be able to reshape our life as a matter of Principle, in line with divine Principle. For as long as we don't accept sin, sickness, and death as a reality, the door is open to healing on the basis of divine Principle.
Apparently it is through the process of moving with divine Principle, by which the healing is accomplished, that we begin to loose the mortal sense of limitation and finity. In my estimation, the second part is essential. With it, she makes it very plain that there will never be a time in all the history of Christian Science healing when a sign is hung in front of the entrance to healing, that "only angels may apply." The 170 pages of testimony that I referred to earlier, bear witness to this fact.
The metaphoric images that pertain to the forth column are also very much related to the above. The first image from Christ and Christmas that applies (to the lowest position in the column) is the second part of Christian Unity (13). Here we see the new image of Christianity, as Christian Scientists, ushering in the era of divine Science, based on divine Principle. And we are assured by Mary Baker Eddy as we set out to carry forward Christ Jesus' work:
'T is the same hand
unfolds His power,
In the next image (14) we see the new Christianity as Christian Scientists knocking on the door of humanity. We also see the new Christianity standing on a unique foundation that represents Mary Baker Eddy's foursquare matrix. The metaphor for it is woven into the design of the carpet and is of a form that is uniquely related to the structural form for representing the Glossary definition in the matrix.
Truth pleads to-night:
Just take Me in!
The term "mass" isn't pointing to a funeral march, of course, but evidently refers the mass-less movements that allow us to traverse vast 'distances' in healing when moving as a matter of Principle.
The next image (15) presents to us the crown that represents in metaphor the full dimensions of the foursquare matrix (9 and 16 all in one) and a cross overgrown with a living vine surrounded by nine birds (9x16=144). This is a complex image which relates strongly to the discovery and application of principles. And the light that shines through the crown unto the cross comes from above, from divine Principle.
The final image, for the final element in the matrix, the 16th element, the top element in the fourth column, has not been provided by Mary Baker Eddy, but remains a blank page. Only a verse has been provided, and that has been attributed by Mary Baker Eddy to Christ Jesus. The verse ends:
And I will give him the MORNING STAR.
The final image in the unfolding of divine Principle in divine Science could not have been provided by Mary Baker Eddy. The final image corresponds with the textbook chapter, The Apocalypse, which presents the end of all evil through the moral, spiritual, and scientific, development of humanity. The resulting potential is truly infinite, and its scope beyond imagination. What image could describe it. On the other hand, the potential exists that we will never achieve that final victory over evil that is the natural outcome in divine Science. A blank page could signify that humanity in its unwillingness to respond to divine Principle will keep the door open to its nuclear weapons potential with which to end its existence. The potential of atomic force was known to Mary Baker Eddy, which she has chosen as a Bible lesson topic.
The key to the choices that will be made along this line in the future is evidently found in the foursquare matrix structure that Mary Baker Eddy has constructed all of her major works in full conformity with it. These structures come to light as the world most advanced pedagogical structures for scientific discovery, the recognition of principles, the application of principles, even to the recognition of divine Principle. These are her provisions for our time, while the opportunity remains to implement them.
When Abraham was confronted by God with the impending self-destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, for divine Principle is never destructive, Abraham asked if the destruction can be prevented if fifty 'righteous' people can be found in the city.
In a modern version of that allegory God would have answered Abraham, "I am Principle, the most powerful principle in the universe. In fact, I am the only Principle. If fifty people would be found in the cities who can uplift society onto a platform where everything unfolds as a matter of Principle, their security is assured. If they choose to engage themselves into other pursuits that are not constructive to their existence, but destroy even that which they have, their existence will end. There is nothing that I can do to change that. That's out of my hands. I'm stuck in this situation like an air-traffic controller who looses the echo of a plane on the radar screen. That what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah. The people's image disappeared from the radar screen, and that means only one thing, Abraham, and you know what that is. Yes, fifty people can change that and re-light their civilization."
Well Abraham wasn't too optimistic about the chances that fifty 'righteous' people can be found. "What about forty-five, or just forty, or even thirty, or twenty, or ten?"
God agreed with Abraham that ten would be sufficient. Indeed, how many people does it really take to start a scientific revolution with which to uplift the whole society.
The Scriptures tell us that God never saw their echo reappear. Their civilization simply crashed. The original allegory, of course, was written a long time ago and uses metaphors appropriate for the time. Nevertheless, the allegory reflects a certain awareness of God being manifest as Principle. May Baker Eddy certainly agrees. The last stanza from her rendition of the Lord's Prayer, which corresponds with the sixteenth element, reflects this awareness. That stanza confirms the pure nature of divine Principle:
For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All.
If we place our future in this court, it will surely be brighter than anything we have yet imagined. That potential exists. Mary Baker Eddy's structures for our moral, spiritual, and scientific development are in place. They need only to be activated. We require these structures that have been created by Mary Baker Eddy. We require them for a proper celebration of God whose existence and nature is the chief focal point of these structures. Without them, our celebration of God is like a boat adrift of the oceans without a mariner on board to direct it.
Is it any wonder
then, that Mary Baker Eddy has created all of her major works in structural
conformity with the foundation of these structures, the city foursquare
matrix, which make them all an integral part of it by their most fundamental
design? Mary Baker Eddy's celebration of God in her life, was evidently
manifest in these structures on which all of her life-work has been founded,
by which the celebration has been given shape and an orderly dimension. It
is actually impossible to celebrate the life and achievements of Mary Baker
Eddy without this celebration also becoming a celebration of God on the platform
that Mary Baker Eddy has designed for it from the very beginning, as far as
this can be determined.
